8 millions Canadians have high blood pressure

According to a new report, more Canadians are suffering from high blood pressure or hypertension, which could increase their risk of heart attacks or strokes, Aldergrove Star reports.

Several health problems, which can also cause heart disease, were detailed in a new survey released Tuesday (Oct. 18) by Heart & Stroke.

One in four Canadians suffers from high blood pressure. Reports predict an increase in lifestyle risk factors and undiagnosed new cases due to the pandemic.

Eight out of ten doctors are concerned about the rising number of adults with high blood pressure, according to a survey of almost 1,000 health professionals.

Among their top concerns are the aging population, the increase in adults diagnosed at young ages, the pandemic, and inadequate education.

Hypertension has spiked since the pandemic due to stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, increased alcohol consumption, and obesity.

As a result of the lack of access to screenings and in-person appointments, doctors who participated in the study fear that people with already diagnosed cases are less vigilant about managing their health.
