What Are The Worst Drinks For High Blood Pressure?

Share:

The relationship between alcohol consumption and high blood pressure is a critical health concern, The Healthy writes. Recent insights from cardiologists and medical studies have pinpointed the types of alcoholic beverages most detrimental to blood pressure control.

Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, emphasizes the importance of public awareness regarding alcohol and hypertension. He asserts that moderate consumption might not be harmful. But it doesn’t confer health benefits and can increase stroke risks when blood pressure rises.

A 2023 study found a direct link between alcohol intake and increased systolic blood pressure. It was published in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension. Consuming an average of 12 grams of alcohol daily can elevate systolic blood pressure by 1.25 mmHg. More pronounced effect of up to 4.9 mmHg at higher intakes was observed, especially in men. The standard serving of beer, wine, or distilled spirits in the US contains is about 14 grams of alcohol.

Specific types of alcohol high vs blood pressure

Dr. Samuel Mathis, an assistant professor at the University of Texas, states that drinks with added sugars are particularly harmful. Equally harmful are drinks with high alcohol content. Examples include cocktails mixed with soda, dessert cocktails, margaritas, Manhattans, and dirty martinis. He notes that the quantity of alcohol consumed is a more influential factor than the drink type itself.

Additionally, Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez from the Mayo Clinic warns against binge drinking. Consuming more than three drinks in one sitting can temporarily raise blood pressure. Regular binge drinking can cause long-term increases. Dr Lopez-Jimenez suggests that heavy drinkers who reduce their intake to moderate levels can see substantial improvements in their health. Potential effect is decreasing systolic blood pressure by about 5.5 mmHg and diastolic pressure by around 4 mmHg.

Conclusion

Individuals concerned about maintaining healthy blood pressure levels should be particularly cautious with alcoholic beverages high in sugar content or alcohol volume. Moderation is the key. Awareness of the types and quantities of alcohol consumed plays a crucial role in managing heart health.
