According to a new study by the University of Dundee in Scotland, taking blood pressure medication at any time is fine. The findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual meeting in Barcelona. Over 21,000 patients with high blood pressure were followed for over five years in a randomized trial and found that taking the drugs in the morning or evening did not affect their protection against heart attacks, strokes, and vascular deaths.
Blood pressure drugs were given to men and women randomly‘ either in the morning or at night for the study. In addition, researchers examined hospitalizations due to heart attacks, strokes, or cardiovascular deaths. In the five years following treatment, 3.4% of patients taking their medications at night and 3.7% of patients taking their medications in the morning experienced heart attacks, strokes, or died of cardiovascular disease. According to this study, taking medication at night, contrary to previous studies concluded, does not have a substantial benefit.
According to Dr Thomas MacDonald, a research professor at the University of Dundee in Scotland, the study “was one of the largest cardiovascular studies ever conducted and provides a definitive answer on the question of whether blood pressure-lowering medications should be taken in the morning or evening”.
