A condition known as constipation can range in severity from simply being annoying to being a warning sign that something serious is going on with your health.
Constipation can have a variety of causes. Drinking too little fluids or fiber, lacking exercise, or abusing laxatives are some of the reasons why people frequent the bathroom less often. However, another possible reason for constipation is the medication you’re taking.
BestLife Online, a premier lifestyle site, elaborates on various groups of medicines that may cause constipation. Faith Alex, MD, of the National Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC) explains the effect of blood pressure medication:
“Several types of blood pressure medications may cause constipation, including calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and diuretics”.
This occurs because these drugs “relax the smooth muscles in blood vessels to lower blood pressure” caused by conditions like hypertension. But they also relax the muscles in the gut and may cause constipation.”
